not pet food. just real food.
our mission
What we’re all about:
At Holistic Harvest, we believe pets should get to eat real food. Our pets deserve to eat the foods they biologically require. They also deserve to eat foods that taste good to them.
But we don’t stop there. We look at the big picture: the role of predators in ecosystems. We recognize that predators play an important role in keeping ecosystems healthy. This is especially true for grasslands ecosystems.
Large herds of grazing animals moving as they would in the presence of predators is required to restore grasslands.
This brings us to our mission:
Holistic Harvest seeks to draw attention to the predator-prey connection to the land while producing high quality pet food products.
But why?
We envision a different world. A world where soil is treated as a living organism. A world where grass does the work that grass was meant to do. A world where cows, pigs, chickens, and bison do the work that they were meant to do.
And a world where dogs and other predators do the work they were meant to do.
All living beings play important roles in the ecosystem.
Native grasses hold the soil together, prevent erosion, stabilize river banks, lower and regulate temperatures, help prevent extreme weather events, and much more. But native grasses are not able to do their work without the help of large herds of grazing animals.
Cows and other herding animals trample dead material, stimulate grass growth, plant seeds, and fertilize the soil. But cows are not able to do their work if they are not managed in ways that mimic the presence of predators.
When predators are not present, herding animals have a damaging effect on the land. They trample too much. They compact the soil. They overgraze some areas and under-graze others. They stay in one place too long. However, in the presence of predators—or in management systems that mimic the presence of predators—the impact on the land is positive. These systems keep herding animals moving and the impact on the land is more plant growth and diversity, and more soil life.
The bison are gone. And so are most native predators. So what do these things mean for the modern world?
Our holistic approach
All humans impact the land. This includes humans who are direct managers of the land (farmers) and humans who are not (consumers).
Human actions tend to have a negative impact on the land. This is because human decisions tend to have unintended consequences.
It is time for a different decision-making model. A holistic model. A model that considers the economic, social, and environmental impact of decisions.
Holistic Harvest seeks to manage holistically while also partnering with land managers and vendors who manage holistically.
The end result is a product for consumers with a positive impact on economic systems, social structures, and the environment and all its living beings.
Join us in building a happier healthier life for our pets and ourselves!
